The ballad of the the Silver Slipper

The tiny home industry is more relevant now than it ever has been. Which is not surprising as the housing market, for so many, is unobtainable. However, the trend for expensive tiny homes is most certainly on the rise. Our humble roots of backyard builders have been replaced with big warehouses and touring facilities. This alone drives the cost. Heavy overhead has to be paid somehow. However, we now have a super villain within the mix; the rising costs of materials.

Far Out has been designing and building tiny homes since 2016. The first 20’ unit we designed and built cost us less than $20,000. I have since priced out the same unit and the materials budget has more than doubled. This makes designing and building “affordable” tiny homes extremely difficult. So, what can be done?

Can we somehow slim down the essentials of a tiny home? Can we create architecture that sets the stage for a fluid build? Can we still fit the bare necessities into the home and hit a price point that most people can afford? The answer is yes. Minimalist living is just that; a means of life with less consumption and a smaller carbon footprint. We have designed a unit that will allow for peaceful living with all the bare necessities within arms reach.

I am excited to introduce the Silver Slipper. This perfect tiny home will fit most any minimalist lifestyle like a glove at a price point that will make you swoon! The Silver Slipper is outfitted with a sleeping area, a kitchen, and a full bathroom with closet space. While she is little she is definitely mighty. Measuring in at a length of 12’ and width of just over 8’. This compact home will not take a large truck to tow, meaning, most any 6 cylinder could handle the load.

Let’s discuss each space within the unit. The bathroom is outfitted with a 30”x30” shower stall. No teeny tiny RV showers here, we are talking full size! The vanity is floating and can be upgraded to include storage. The toilet is a standard flush and ready to be hooked up just like an RV. We can also swap out the standard flush toilet for a composting one if need be. The bathroom becomes its own space when the pocket door closes. The closet space resides within the kitchen and is large enough to hold clothing and dry goods. The best part about the closet is, drum roll please, you can actually hang your clothes up! It’s the little wins when living tiny, isn’t it? Moving into the kitchen the full size sink rests upon a beautiful butcher block countertop. There will be below counter cabinetry and space for a mini fridge. The home also comes equipped with a removable induction cooktop. The sleeping area runs parallel to the kitchen. The space will fit a full bed and comes with open air shelving. The exterior esthetic is reminiscent of Mid-Centuty Modern architecture and can be customized to fit most any taste.

That all sounds great, right? Let’s be honest, its going to all come down to price point! So let’s talk brass tax. The base price for this unit comes in at $37,500. We offer two modes of financing. One option is zero down with shorter pay back terms the other is 20% down with longer payback terms. The Silver Slipper will be available for order this Fall from Far Out Tiny Homes!
